“Earthism” Worshippers Unite!

with 6 comments

James Dobson’s attempt to remove Rev. Richard Cizik from the National Association of Evangelicals due to his passion for environmental concerns is getting plenty of attention on various blogs. (Here’s one, and here’s another).

Scot McKnight adds this quote from Jerry Falwell…the guy just never disappoints does he?

“I am today raising a flag of opposition to this alarmism about global warming and urging all believers to refuse to be duped by these ‘earthism’ worshippers,” the Rev. Jerry Falwell.”

Environmental concern = “‘earthism’ worshippers”???

So today — in honor of true evangelicalism — toss some garbage out of your car on your way home — to God be the Glory!

  1. Wow, that would be a hilarious statement if it wasn’t so so sad … poor Jerry … I think he needs a hug but from a girl cause he couldn’t handle a hug from a guy. I feel relieved that he has raised the flag cause this world is just too clean and being taken care of so well by all of us. On the flip side a lot of money goes toward saving dogs while a lot of people are going hungry… that seems wrong.

  2. I keep getting more and more digusted with the term ‘evangelical’. Add another point of disgust to that list.

  4. charlie I remember getting angry at you for speaking negatively of Focus on the Family about a year ago, but after reading this I might be with you. This is ridiculous.

    A few interesting points:

    1) The letter sent to the NAE was signed by Dobson and other leading evangelicals, none of which are members of the NAE. The interim president put it best when he said “We would normally look to our own constituency … and not to those who have chosen not to be members of the NAE … for counsel.”

    2) Jerry Falwell recently gave a sermon titled “The Myth of Global Warming.” If Cal ever gave a sermon with that title I’d probably start looking for a different church.

I guess I just don’t understand how these “respected” Christian leaders can act in such a manner. I can only imagine how Dobson would respond to a letter addressed to Focus on the Family from Cizik asking for his resignation.

  5. What a dummy. It seems as if the Christian right is moving more towards “idiocracy” every day.

    That being said…

What are we doing that is making a difference? It seems like we sit and talk a lot about how religious rights are idiots (which may be the case for most), but what are we doing besides sitting and pointing fingers and laughing? I’m talking about myself here.

I’m tired of hearing how religious rights are saying ridiculous things. It seems like all we want to do is talk about it and laugh…But what am I actually doing about it?
